TACTILE SENSOR FOR ROBOTIC ARM

 The patented biorebotic sensor (together with its manufacturing process and its application) acts as artificial skin capable of perceiving the intensity and the point of contact of an applied forces, mimicking the sense of human touch. Innovative for its lightness and adaptability to curved areas, it can cover large surfaces of robotic prostheses and/or collaborative robotic arms.

TECHNICAL FEATURES :

The tactile sensor consists of a silicon rubber casing containing an optical fiber that connects, in a continuous path, a plurality of sensors Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. The casing, less than 10 mm thick, deforms under the action of a force applied to its surface, transmitting to the FBG sensors a corresponding stress that is translated into an optical signal and transported by the optical fiber. Compared to the tactile sensors developed so far, this receptor mimics, for flexibility, deformation and sensitivity, the human sense of touch in perceiving and locating the pressure over a large area, possibly curved, up to 90 cm2. The biorobotic device can be used to coat robotic prostheses, including industrial or assistive collaborative robots, and connected to neuronal networks. The use of FBG sensors guarantees an easy manufacturing process with repeatable results.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS :

  • Robotic prostheses covering;
  • Collaborative robotic arm covering;
  • Robotic applications;
  • Safety systems in production processes.
Advantages :

  • Determination of the intensity and point of application of a force;
  • Greater sensitivity and width of the surface that can be covered;
  • Covering even curved and relatively wide surfaces;
  • Lightweight, flexible, adaptable to any type of surface;
  • Simple and economical manufacturing thanks to the use of FBG sensors.
